Medicine and Positive Thinking - Healing and Welln

Medicine and Positive Thinking - Healing and Wellness through Positive Thinking by Lee, Michael

Positive thinking has, for the longest time, been relegated to the realm of new age, inspirational, and metaphysical healing rather than to the empirical fields of science and physiology. Medicine and positive thinking, therefore, were once thought to go together like brownies and onions. But recent findings have revealed that medicine and positive thinking may not be as incompatible after all. Indeed, they may actually be far more complementary than we could ever imagine.

Not only is positive thinking good for mental health, but it is now scientifically proven to be just as healthy for the body. Optimists generally have lower levels of stress hormones and are at lower risk for cardiovascular disease — telltale signs of a healthier immune system—compared to those of pessimists. Positive thinkers are also more likely to get well faster during treatment for a physical illness.

If negative factors like anxiety and stress can adversely affect a person's physical well-being, then it should follow that positive thinking has a reverse effect. The only reason this hasn't been readily accepted as truth before is because for years, we have tended to focus more on the negative, measuring and quantifying depression and such while the scales of happiness remained uncharted.

Research has repeatedly shown that chronic and psychological stress delays the healing process, reduces vaccine effectiveness, and diminishes the immune system's health. Here, at least, we have known that there is, in fact, an obvious connection between what you know and feel in your head and how your body responds to it. Literally, you are what you think.

Medicine and positive thinking are hardly interchangeable, but they work wonders when taken hand in hand. So when you're sick, expect positive results. Picture yourself in the prime of health; or if you want to be more realistic, visualize yourself recuperating from your sickness. Laugh your way to recovery. That is the best medicine, after all, according to the well-known proverb.

Positive expectations, like the placebo effect, can greatly reduce pain; thus, proving the innate power of an optimistic outlook in life. So do yourself a favor by thinking positive and helping yourself get better.

Medicine and positive thinking do work famously together. It is not believing in a false hope, but rather embracing the beauty of life despite its many setbacks. Positive thinking was never meant to be a miracle cure, but if you focus on living instead of drowning in anger, sorrow, and self-pity, you may just find yourself thinking your way to health and wellness.

Metaphoric structuring: understanding time through spatial metaphors

Cognition, Vol. 75, No. 1. (14 April 2000), pp. 1-28.

The present paper evaluates the claim that abstract conceptual domains are structured through metaphorical mappings from domains grounded directly in experience. In particular, the paper asks whether the abstract domain of time gets its relational structure from the more concrete domain of space. Relational similarities between space and time are outlined along with several explanations of how these similarities may have arisen. Three experiments designed to distinguish between these explanations are described. The results indicate that (1) the domains of space and time do share conceptual structure, (2) spatial relational information is just as useful for thinking about time as temporal information, and (3) with frequent use, mappings between space and time come to be stored in the domain of time and so thinking about time does not necessarily require access to spatial schemas. These findings provide some of the first empirical evidence for Metaphoric Structuring. It appears that abstract domains such as time are indeed shaped by metaphorical mappings from more concrete and experiential domains such as space.

Dear Mark: Saturated Fat

Worth eating?

Dear Mark,

In one of last week's Cheap Meat discussions, you said something about ratios and saturated fats and how saturated fats aren't really the issue in your mind. I might have been missing something in the conversation. Can you fill me in?

The issue of ratios within animal fat was raised by reader Jaana as she shared Cordain's discussion of the varying polyunsaturated fat content and corresponding omega ratios in muscle meat versus different organ meats. Cordain compares wild game (that we can assume are comparable to the meats our pre-agricultural ancestors ate) with the domestically raised livestock we eat today. As a general rule, the muscle meat of conventional livestock today has less polyunsaturated fat than wild game does. Conventional domestic meat also has more saturated fat than wild game.

I've said before that the hype over saturated fat is overblown in many respects. Saturated fats are required for many crucial functions in the body. They make up 1/2 of cell membrane structure. They enhance calcium absorption and immune function. They aid in the body's synthesis of the essential fatty acids and provide a rich source of fat soluble vitamins. My beef isn't with the beef fat. It's with the carbs – the grains that conventionally raised animals are fed as well as the buns, chips and other assorted carbs we modern humans eat with the side of beef.

This is the part conventional "wisdom" doesn't get: saturated fat in the diet doesn't directly translate to saturated fats in the blood. It's all how it's metabolized. Saturated fat levels in the blood are influenced by the prevalence of carbs in the diet and the subsequent carb-generated lipogenesis process.

And it's my opinion that CW's hobby horse takes attention away from the more legitimate concerns surrounding saturated fat intake. An animal's fat stores carry the highest load of antibiotics, feed pesticides and herbicides, and hormones. Obviously, this didn't matter 20,000 years ago, but it matters a whole heck of a lot in the modern world. One way to ameliorate the situation is to eat organic meat. (And, to a lesser extent, grass-fed and -finished, but we covered that last week.) Another way is to eat lower fat meats. (Even the best organic, grass-finished meats will still carry dioxins in their fat stores as a result of acid rain in most regions of the country.)

Finally, as reader Charles noted in last week's discussion (thanks for the lead, Charles), really the polyunsaturated fat content in either grass or grain fed beef isn't that substantial to begin with. Grass-fed is better, but it's not worth excessive concern or breaking the bank.

Whether you choose to eat higher fat meats or lower fat cuts, my message is the same. Look for the cleanest meat you can find and afford. Sure, shoot for grass-fed and finished when possible, but clean should trump grass-fed by a long shot. Beyond this, arm yourself with a diet and supplement regimen that offers copious antioxidants and plenty of omega-3 fatty acids to achieve a 1:1 ratio.

Thanks to everyone for all their comments and questions. There's nothing like a vigorous and spirited discussion! Keep it coming.

PDF, Faster Delivery, Lowered Costs

PDF ( Portable Document Format ) is a great way to make sure that the files sent to clients, partners, suppliers, solicitors and consultants can be viewed on all computers with the same look and feel.

You might know how burdensome is to send files to clients, partners, suppliers, solicitors and consultants just to find out that the look and feel of your document has changed or worse still, the document could not even be read at all?

You might as well have similar problems when files are sent to you. Could the effectiveness and efficiency of your team be improved by knowing that every time you send or receive a document, it can always be viewed exactly as it was created? Do you have hundreds or maybe thousands of newsletters, manuals, technical papers and product specifications that you need published on the internet, intranets or on CD?

These common problems are why many companies have already defined PDF (Portable Document Format) as their company-wide publishing standard. Over 200 million users worldwide can now read PDF format documents.

The PDF document format provides the following business benefits:

Documents always look exactly the same, for all senders and receivers of a document, regardless of the hardware or software used. The documents act as colour, electronic fax machines but with much higher quality and speed. Documents can be distributed worldwide for almost zero cost and then be digitally printed in small or large volumes, at any location. The documents can be magnified by up to 1600%, with no diminishing of quality. The documents can be navigated by keyword search, table of contents or hyperlinks. This greatly increases their usability. The format is ideal for presentations, since PDF documents always look exactly the same on all platforms. The file format is very compact, so files can be sent quickly to recipients. The file format is ideal for archiving, since the look and feel of documents is retained and the document size is compact The file format is essential for business documents like agreements and forms that must retain their exact appearance for legal reasons. For example, this may apply to application forms, tax returns, licence agreements, tender documents, quotations and logos. FASTER, BETTER, CHEAPER All these advantages translate into faster, cheaper and less complex viewing, navigating, storing and printing, for business documents. So digital, document workflow throughout the company can become more reliable, with richly formatted PDF documents maintaining their very high quality, regardless of where they are sent or who views the documents. PDF is truly a global, document exchange format.

By using PDF documents within your own company and encouraging and/or subsidising the cost of purchase of PDF software, with your partners, suppliers, legal firms, accountants and various outside consultancies, then more and more of your business documents can be exchanged digitally. The benefits to the business are faster delivery, better customer service and lower costs.

Killer Download: Top apps to track bandwidth

Just about everybody who uses the Internet these days has broadband access. Whether it's DSL, cable, or a direct high-speed LAN connection, most people choose a faster connection to make files download faster, videos stream smoother, and online gaming much more enjoyable. But what if something is eating up bandwidth that you don't know about? Particularly when you have a superfast connection or Wi-Fi, how do you know there isn't something or someone leeching off your bandwidth when everything seems to be working smoothly?

Though I have my Big Three security apps running on every Windows machine I use, I know I can never be too careful about malware. Though it is not a fullproof system for detection, knowing how much bandwidth your computer is using can be a clue into possible issues. One of the best ways to detect an issue is to watch for changes in your computer's behavior, and a bandwidth meter can detect changing trends as an early indicator. Even if it's not malware, a good bandwidth meter can tell you if a new program is sucking up too much bandwidth or if another user is leeching your Wi-Fi connection.

I've rounded up a few freeware and shareware bandwidth meters you can download and check out right away. At the very least, you'll have a window into how fast your Internet connection runs over time to find out the best time to download large files.

Debt Management Plan—an Act of Stopping Debt Run

Debt Management Plan—an Act of Stopping Debt Run by Roger John

Debt management plan is method of solving the complexities of debt trapping.
Experts at giving debt management plan instruct their clients to consider a host of tactics in debt situations. Individuals can negotiate with their creditors or their utility company to lengthen the terms of their debt management plan arrangement, reduce their monthly charges, or even potentially excuse some of the fees or service charges to help you get your life in order. Individuals may also write creditors letters requesting debt assistance.

Under the debt management plan, individuals are required to select a right lender of their financial choice. Sometimes, it becomes rather difficult for a candidate to select a lender because many fraudulent lenders have invaded the money market in order that they may get full advantage of the borrowers' financial condition. No matter with the advent of internet in the business market has made the debt management plan quite simpler. Now, borrowers have to fill in a simple application form for debt management plan. And, the lender offers him with his debt management plan provision.

Lenders make a single monthly repayment scheme for entire of the borrowers' debts. In doing so, lenders meditate between borrowers and different lenders. The lenders calculate the entire amount of the segregated loans, and design the repayment plans in such a way that both the lenders and the borrowers may not have to face any sort of financial burden considerably. In this view, borrowers get good at repayment, and feasible financial at their budget.

A final piece of debt consolidation plan is axiomatic and in many ways very intuitive. Create the conditions for budgetary health by checking in with individuals' spending and saving plan at least once a month. This way, individuals would not be caught off guard by interest rate charges, they will know precisely where their money is going, and they will be able to catch inaccuracies, error, or fraudulent charges on their accounts before they metastasize into larger problems.

Steven G. Brant: Senator Obama's Passport Records Broken Into: We Must Learn The Truth

Breaking News from MSNBC:

The passport files of Senator Barack Obama were inappropriately accessed on January 9th, February 14th, and March 14th of this year by contract employees of the State Department.

The facts being presented on MSNBC (or perhaps I should say "information being presented as fact") as coming from the State Department is that the fact of these breaches of Senator Obama's files was not reported beyond the mid-level managers who first learned of these events until this afternoon. In other words, Secretary of State Rice -- we are told by the State Department -- did not learn these facts until yesterday. And we are told that Senator Obama's office was not told about any of this until today.

However, the State Department's Inspector General has NOT conducted an investigation. So, all that MSNBC has to go on is the State Department's own statements. An investigation WILL be conducted.

Former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger is telling MSNBC (by phone), "It's pretty clear to me that this was not done for political purposes."

Sorry, Secretary Eagleburger, but you have no more ability to know why Senator Obama's files were broken into than I do.

What I will hold out for is verifiable truths resulting from an independent, absolutely impartial investigation.

I will hold out for verifiable truth regarding not just how this happened and who knew about it and when... but also why it happened.

I hope you will all do the same.

UPDATE:

The State Department's Inspector General's job is currently vacant. The last Inspector General resigned last December.

Also, MSNBC now reports that Secretary of State Rice learned about this today, not yesterday.

Flat colon lesions different from polyps are more common and dangerous than previously believed

While most colon neoplasms (adenomas) appear as polyps protruding into the space inside the colon, some lie flat against the colon wall or are even slightly depressed.  A study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association reports that flat or nonpolypoid colorectal neoplasms (NP-CRNs) are more common that previously believed.

In addition, the flat or depressed lesions were almost ten times as likely to contain cancer than the polyps that protruded.

NP-CRNs are difficult to detect during colonoscopies because they appear very similar to surrounding tissue.  Depressed NP-CRNs that sink into the colon lining are especially hard to find and are the most dangerous.

For the study reported in JAMA,  four specially trained endoscopists at a Veterans Affairs hospital out-patient program in California sprayed the colon with a special blue dye that made the flat lesions easier to see. Over a year's time, they performed more than 1,800 routine colonoscopies trying to identify how often nonpolypoid colorectal neoplasms occurred.

Patients in the study included a screening group who were having routine colorectal cancer screening, a surveillance group who had a personal or family history of colorectal adenomas or cancer, and a group of people with symptoms of colorectal cancer.  There were about 600 in each group, almost all men with an average age of 64.

Nonpolypoid colorectal neoplasms were found in 170 people, about ten percent of the entire group.   They were more common in the surveillance group where more than 15 percent had a NP-CRN.  About 6 percent of the screening and symptoms groups also had NP-CRNs.

Roy M. Soetikno, MD, MS and his colleagues wrote,

In this group of veteran patients, NP-CRNs were relatively common lesions diagnosed during routine colonoscopy and had a greater association with carcinoma compared with polypoid neoplasms, irrespective of size.

Three years later, follow-up colonoscopies were done in 68 percent of the 580 patients who were recommended to have one according to guidelines. In those 393 patients, 12 advanced adenomas and 1 new cancer were found, significantly lower percentages than similar studies without the new techniques.

Gastroenterologists doing the colonoscopies for the study developed new skills for recognizing NP-CRN's by working with leading Japanese endoscopy centers who were already finding and describing NP-CRN's.  Videos of colonoscopies helped the doctors see changes in color, blood vessels, and colon wall that were characteristic of these lesions.

In 2000, it became routine practice for doctors in the VA unit where the study was done to use a carmine-indigo spray during colonoscopy when they suspected a NP-CRN.  When they found a lesion, they removed and biopsied it using the endoscope.

Although colonoscopy and removal of polyps prevents many cancers from ever developing, between 0.3 percent and 0.9 percent of patients will develop an interval cancer within the three years after a colonoscopy.  These may be due to missed lesions, incomplete removal of polyps, or fast-growing cancers.  However, the research team believes that NP-CRN's may also contribute to interval cancers and identifying and removing them may prevent more colorectal cancer.

The above image shows a NP-CRN (the slightly raised area along the right edge of the first and second pictures) before and after indigo dye was applied.  The third picture is after the position of the colonoscope was changed.  (Images courtesy of the Journal of the American Medical Association)

No recurring brain cancer for Bobby Murcer?

In late December 20106, former Yankee and current YES announcer Bobby Murcer was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Recently, a new MRI image revealed only a scar tissue and not a recurrence of cancer.

Well, that’s really good news, right?

There had been differing opinions among doctors about the meaning of the MRI, so as a precaution they scheduled a biopsy for Monday. Murcer had to wait two days for the official word.

“We received great news this morning,” he said in a statement issued by YES. “The biopsy revealed scar tissue. It showed no signs of cancer. We are very excited about this news. It’s what we had hoped for all along.”

Bobby Murcer was a professional baseball player for 17 seasons. He played for the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs and back again briefly for the New York Yankees.

Patrick Swayze Has Pancreatic Cancer

If you were a teener in the 80s, then you must know Patrick Swayze.

You know…the Dirty Dancing Patrick Swayze and the Road House Patrick Swayze.

Yeah, definitely the Ghost Patrick Swayze.

Reports recently broke that Patrick Swayze only has five weeks to live due to pancreatic cancer.

While it is true that patients with pancreatic cancer has a very small chance of surviving this deadly cancer, doctors to Mr. Swayze stated that what the tabloids have reporeted isn’t exactly true.

“Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far,” Swayze’s physician, Dr. George Fisher said in the statement. “All of the reports stating the time frame of his prognosis and his physical side effects are absolutely untrue. We are considerably more optimistic.”

But even though the five-week time frame trumpeted by tabloids may be false, cancer specialists say that pancreatic cancer more often than not comes with a daunting prognosis.

Well, we only wish that Patrick Swayze will respond well to his treatments.

Some Vitamin Supplements May Increase Risk of Lung Cancer

According to a study of more than 77,000 vitamin users , intake of some vitamin supplements do not protect against lung cancer, especially in smokers.

Said the study’s author, Christopher G. Slatore, M.D., of the University of Washington, in Seattle:

“Our study of supplemental multivitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E and folate did not show any evidence for a decreased risk of lung cancer.

Indeed, increasing intake of supplemental vitamin E was associated with a slightly increased risk of lung cancer.”

Such were the findings of Dr. Slatore and colleagues from selected prospective cohort of 77,126 men and women between 50 and 76 years of age in the Washington state VITAL (VITamins And Lifestyle) study.

From the said population, the team determined their rate of developing lung cancer over four years considering the current and past vitamin usage, smoking, and other demographic and medical parameters.

Jeff Healey Lost Cancer Battle

In a Toronto hospital on Sunday evening, Jeff Healey lost his long battle with cancer.

Acclaimed jazz and rock guitarist Jeff Healey was remembered Sunday as a musician of rare ability who had a wicked sense of humour and a generous nature as fans and bandmates mourned his death at age 41, following a battle with cancer.

Bandmates of Canadian rock and jazz legend Jeff Healey were among those shocked by the news of his death Sunday.

Healey died Sunday evening in a Toronto hospital surrounded by family and a bandmate, Colin Bray.

Jeff Healey - a Grammy-nominated musician - survived by his wife Christie and two children (daughter Rachel, 13 and son Derek, 3) had long battled with cancer since age one  when he lost his eyesight to retinoblastoma — a rare form of retinal cancer.

Bray said Healey had been hospitalized for a week and that his advanced lung cancer made his final hours difficult.

Healey had undergone numerous operations in recent years to remove tumours from his lungs and leg.

A Miracle Story!

Miracles are still possible.

I wanted to share with you a wonderful story about a 36 year old patient with metastatic colon cancer. I met her about 18 months ago when she was referred to me for chemotherapy. She had a large tumor in her colon which was almost obstructing. We recommended surgery and the tumor was successfully removed. Unfortunately the liver showed numerous metastases in both lobes of the liver. The liver was almost completely consumed with cancer. She was told by her oncologist she has 3-6 months to live. She was very depressed but heard about our center and the advantages of clinical trials and wanted to do everything to fight this disease. She was proactive looking and checking out all her possibilities.

We met her and developed a plan which included enrolling her in a clinical trial. She was assigned to FOLFIRI and Avastin and Erbitux. We were very happy that she was able to get both antibodies since only Avastin is approved for metastatic disease. Previous Bond II studies have suggested that these two antibodies are safe and active in patients with refractory colon cancer.

She was very excited and ready to go. She tolerated the chemotherapy very well with no significant side effects. We checked her CEA and did CT scans every 8 weeks to check the success of her chemotherapy.

After 2 months of treatment the tumors in the liver did shrink a lot and some of them disappeared. After six months of chemotherapy the tumors continue to shrink and we discussed her in our multidisciplinary tumor board meeting, where oncologists, hepatobiliary surgeons, colorectal surgeons and interventional radiologists discuss whether it is possible to resect the liver lesion.

The surgeons were hesitant because at the time of diagnosis the lesions were so numerous that in their opinion, there was no chance of cure. However we convinced them to take a risk in this young healthy woman. The surgery took place about 12 months ago. It was an extensive surgery and we have to thank our hepatobiliary surgeon for a 12 hour surgery during which they resected all tumors lesions but they found also lesions they could not remove and used high frequency ablation.

After surgery, a CT scan and the tumor marker showed no cancer anymore.

She is now 10 months out and the follow up CT scan shows no cancer. It is too early to say she is cured, but no one would have ever believed we could get her cancer free, but we proved them wrong.  She was treated after surgery with further chemotherapy.

Her insurance did not initially allow her to be treated at USC. I called the Medical Director of the HMO and pointed out the chances that she will beat this and if not treated I will recommend legal actions since they are violating standard of care.

The next week she was in my office and completed our therapies and she doing very well and will be featured with other success in our newest cancer center report.

Fruits and vegetables can fight colon cancer

We have known for a long time that fruits and vegetables are good for our health. They are particularly good for our colon. Fruits and vegetables have fiber which makes our digestion successful. The bowel moves faster through the colon, so poison doesn't stay so long in the bowel and therefore causes less harm.

Dietary fiber is also fermented by bacteria in the colon which leads to short chained fatty acids which protects against cancer causing substances. The reason fruits and vegetables are protecting against cancer is because they increase activity of enzymes that detoxify cancer causing substances, altering estrogen metabolism and altering the bacteria and pH in the colon.

For example, onions, garlic, scallions and leeks (allium vegetables) are rich in sulfur compounds which increase enzymes to inhibit bacteria that convert nitrates to nitrites in the stomach, and nitrites can combine with amines to form nitrosamines which can cause cancer of the stomach.

Cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage have high content of organic sulfur which can stimulate enzymes in the gut to detoxify cancer causing substances. These vegetables also contain indole-3 carbinol which affects estrogen metabolism and may protect against breast and endometrial cancer. Green vegetables such as lettuce, spinach and mustard greens have high levels of antioxidants which block damage from free radicals within a cell. Green leafy vegetables also contain high levels of folic acid which can protect against colon cancer and heart attacks.

However fruits and vegetables, particularly the ones which are colorful, also have important minerals and vitamins which can fight cancer. We know for example that red colors (tomatoes, raspberries, red peppers) contain lycopene and can prevent colon and prostate cancer which is the reason that pizza has been shown to prevent colon cancer. Tomatoes may protect against esophageal and prostate cancer and carrots against cancer in the mouth and pharynx.

Bright colored vegetables and fruits such as red and blue berries have a high dose of antioxidants which also have shown to reduce colon cancer. Now science has proven without a doubt that there is a relationship between the intake of fruits and vegetables and health.

There is evidence that eating fruits and vegetables reduces gastric and colon cancer. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C which acts as an antioxidant and also prevents formation of nitrosamines. Yellow fruits and vegetables are rich in beta carotene which is also an antioxidant and also can be metabolized to vitamin A which helps to maintain healthy cells.

Millennium Vegan Restaurant

I ate the best meal of my life in San Francisco.

I chose a chard and lentil roulade with a side of rosemary artichoke and potato gratin. After one bite I regretted eating some bread before my meal. In fact I regretted eating lunch. It was so tasty, so filling, so heavenly.

It was fabulous. Really, it surpassed Candle 79.

There was no room for dessert or even tea. In fact, I couldn't even finish it all. It felt like a crime to stuff myself full of a meal that deserved thoughtful bites. If I couldn't savor it I didn't want to eat it at all.

But I ate it anyway. I ate too much. And still took home a doggy bag. And refused to give it up to a beggar.

Thank you Millenium, for reminding me of what gourmet (vegan) food tastes like.

The Effect of Inappropriate Calibration: Three Case Studies in Molecular Ecology

by Simon Y. W. Ho, Urmas Saarma, Ross Barnett, James Haile, Beth Shapiro

Time-scales estimated from sequence data play an important role in molecular ecology. They can be used to draw correlations between evolutionary and palaeoclimatic events, to measure the tempo of speciation, and to study the demographic history of an endangered species. In all of these studies, it is paramount to have accurate estimates of time-scales and substitution rates. Molecular ecological studies typically focus on intraspecific data that have evolved on genealogical scales, but often these studies inappropriately employ deep fossil calibrations or canonical substitution rates (e.g., 1% per million years for birds and mammals) for calibrating estimates of divergence times. These approaches can yield misleading estimates of molecular time-scales, with significant impacts on subsequent evolutionary and ecological inferences. We illustrate this calibration problem using three case studies: avian speciation in the late Pleistocene, the demographic history of bowhead whales, and the Pleistocene biogeography of brown bears. For each data set, we compare the date estimates that are obtained using internal and external calibration points. In all three cases, the conclusions are significantly altered by the application of revised, internally-calibrated substitution rates. Collectively, the results emphasise the importance of judicious selection of calibrations for analyses of recent evolutionary events.

VIDEO from Medialink and General Motors: Electronic Prescriptions Save Lives and Money

NEW YORK, March 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Four out of every five adults take at
least one medication or dietary supplement every day, according to the
Institute of Medicine. Every year, hundreds of thousands of prescription
drug errors are made due to handwritten prescriptions. These errors often
lead to drug mix-ups, wrong dosages, dangerous drug interactions and
allergic reactions.

To combat growing quality and safety concerns, a bi-partisan coalition
is trying to pass legislation aimed at expediting the use of electronic
prescribing. "E-prescribing" is when a physician uses a computer or
hand-held computing device to electronically generate and send a
prescription to a pharmacist's computer. The benefits of this technology
include reducing potentially harmful drug interactions by alerting
physicians of possible risks, eliminating illegible physician hand-written
prescriptions and cutting patient wait time at the pharmacy.

MAO-B Elevation in Mouse Brain Astrocytes Results in Parkinson's Pathology

by Jyothi K. Mallajosyula, Deepinder Kaur, Shankar J. Chinta, Subramanian Rajagopalan, Anand Rane, David G. Nicholls, Donato A. Di Monte, Heather Macarthur, Julie K. Andersen

Age-related increases in monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) may contribute to neurodegeneration associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). The MAO-B inhibitor deprenyl, a long-standing antiparkinsonian therapy, is currently used clinically in concert with the dopamine precursor L-DOPA. Clinical studies suggesting that deprenyl treatment alone is not protective against PD associated mortality were targeted to symptomatic patients. However, dopamine loss is at least 60% by the time PD is symptomatically detectable, therefore lack of effect of MAO-B inhibition in these patients does not negate a role for MAO-B in pre-symptomatic dopaminergic loss. In order to directly evaluate the role of age-related elevations in astroglial MAO-B in the early initiation or progression of PD, we created genetically engineered transgenic mice in which MAO-B levels could be specifically induced within astroglia in adult animals. Elevated astrocytic MAO-B mimicking age related increase resulted in specific, selective and progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN), the same subset of neurons primarily impacted in the human condition. This was accompanied by other PD-related alterations including selective decreases in mitochondrial complex I activity and increased mitochondrial oxidative stress. Along with a global astrogliosis, we observed local microglial activation within the SN. These pathologies correlated with decreased locomotor activity. Importantly, these events occurred even in the absence of the PD-inducing neurotoxin MPTP. Our data demonstrates that elevation of murine astrocytic MAO-B by itself can induce several phenotypes of PD, signifying that MAO-B could be directly involved in multiple aspects of disease neuropathology. Mechanistically this may involve increases in membrane permeant H2O2 which can oxidize dopamine within dopaminergic neurons to dopaminochrome which, via interaction with mitochondrial complex I, can result in increased mitochondrial superoxide. Our inducible astrocytic MAO-B transgenic provides a novel model for exploring pathways involved in initiation and progression of several key features associated with PD pathology and for therapeutic drug testing.

Ybp2 Associates with the Central Kinetochore of and Mediates Proper Mitotic Progression

by Kentaro Ohkuni, Rashid Abdulle, Amy Hin Yan Tong, Charles Boone, Katsumi Kitagawa

The spindle checkpoint ensures the accurate segregation of chromosomes by monitoring the status of kinetochore attachment to microtubules. Simultaneous mutations in one of several kinetochore and cohesion genes and a spindle checkpoint gene cause a synthetic-lethal or synthetic-sick phenotype. A synthetic genetic array (SGA) analysis using a mad2Δ query mutant strain of yeast identified YBP2, a gene whose product shares sequence similarity with the product of YBP1, which is required for H2O2-induced oxidation of the transcription factor Yap1. ybp2Δ was sensitive to benomyl and accumulated at the mitotic stage of the cell cycle. Ybp2 physically associates with proteins of the COMA complex (Ctf19, Okp1, Mcm21, and Ame1) and 3 components of the Ndc80 complex (Ndc80, Nuf2, and Spc25 but not Spc24) in the central kinetochore and with Cse4 (the centromeric histone and CENP-A homolog). Chromatin-immunoprecipitation analyses revealed that Ybp2 associates specifically with CEN DNA. Furthermore, ybp2Δ showed synthetic-sick interactions with mutants of the genes that encode the COMA complex components. Ybp2 seems to be part of a macromolecular kinetochore complex and appears to contribute to the proper associations among the central kinetochore subcomplexes and the kinetochore-specific nucleosome.

Potential Sites of Bioactive Gibberellin Production during Reproductive Growth in Arabidopsis

Plant Cell, Vol. 20, No. 2. (1 February 2008), pp. 320-336.

Gibberellin 3-oxidase (GA3ox) catalyzes the final step in the synthesis of bioactive gibberellins (GAs). We examined the expression patterns of all four GA3ox genes in Arabidopsis thaliana by promoter-glucuronidase gene fusions and by quantitative RT-PCR and defined their physiological roles by characterizing single, double, and triple mutants. In developing flowers, GA3ox genes are only expressed in stamen filaments, anthers, and flower receptacles. Mutant plants that lack both GA3ox1 and GA3ox3 functions displayed stamen and petal defects, indicating that these two genes are important for GA production in the flower. Our data suggest that de novo synthesis of active GAs is necessary for stamen development in early flowers and that bioactive GAs made in the stamens and/or flower receptacles are transported to petals to promote their growth. In developing siliques, GA3ox1 is mainly expressed in the replums, funiculi, and the silique receptacles, whereas the other GA3ox genes are only expressed in developing seeds. Active GAs appear to be transported from the seed endosperm to the surrounding maternal tissues where they promote growth. The immediate upregulation of GA3ox1 and GA3ox4 after anthesis suggests that pollination and/or fertilization is a prerequisite for de novo GA biosynthesis in fruit, which in turn promotes initial elongation of the silique. 10.1105/tpc.107.057752

Context-aware computing: a guide for the pervasive computing community

Pervasive Services, 2004. ICPS 2004. Proceedings. The IEEE/ACS International Conference on (2004), pp. 39-48.

There is a high interest on context-aware computing expressed by the pervasive computing community, which considers context as a key to design more adaptive applications. Due to this interest, a huge amount of contributions have been made in the field as we can notice from the increasing amount of publications on context and context-aware computing. However, the user interested in integrating context in its specific application will rapidly find himself in a jungle of various tools and techniques. This paper aims at structuring this information by providing a survey on the main context-aware categorization, acquisition and modeling techniques. "Main" refers to the most promising techniques in terms of their genericity in a way that they can be used in various application domains. This work tends to provide a guide for the pervasive computing community in order to select the best technique to use in a specific application or -more interesting- to justify the development of a new one.

Effects of chronic amphetamine or reserpine on self-stimulation responding: animal model of depression?

Psychopharmacology, Vol. 72, No. 1. (1980), pp. 9-15.

The mood-altering properties of amphetamine (AMPH) in humans (euphoria and depression) have been postulated to be related to the increases and decreases respectively which this drug produces in the sensitivity of the reward system of the brain. The present study further evaluated this relationship by testing the effects of chronic reserpine (RES), another treatment that produces depression in humans, on self-stimulation responding. Separate groups of animals implanted with stimulating electrodes in the medial forebrain bundle were administered daily injections of saline, d-AMPH (5 mg/kg X 7 days followed by 10 mg/kg X 7 days), or RES (0.05 mg/kg X 18 days). At treatment termination, both drug groups showed a significant elevation of the reinforcement threshold, with no recovery occurring during 18 subsequent days. Thus, drug-induced depression of self-stimulation responding may serve as an animal model for studying the underlying physiological basis for clinical depression, or at the very least, for drug-induced depression.

Withdrawal from chronic amphetamine elevates baseline intracranial self-stimulation thresholds.

Psychopharmacology, Vol. 117, No. 2. (January 1995), pp. 130-136.

Intracranial self-stimulation was assessed before, within, and after a chronic amphetamine treatment regimen. Amphetamine was given twice daily 5 days per week for 6 weeks at dosages escalating from 1 to 10 mg/kg per injection. Lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation rate-frequency functions were taken 36 h after the last injection in each weekly series and weekly for 3 weeks following the last injection. Frequency thresholds increased and maximal response rates decreased progressively as a function of amphetamine withdrawal during treatment; each returned to near normal levels within 2 weeks of the last injection. When subsequently tested under amphetamine, animals previously receiving the 6-week amphetamine treatment regimen had self-stimulation thresholds and maximal response rates that did not differ significantly from those of saline-treated control animals. These data confirm that chronic amphetamine treatment results in a dependence syndrome characterized in part by a phasic depression in the brain mechanism mediating the reinforcing effects of lateral hypothalamic electrical stimulation.

How One Big Idea Can Reel In The Customers

How One Big Idea Can Reel In The Customers by JimM

One big sales tip. When working with your prospects and customers focus on their needs and their customers' challenges. That's where the ideas are.

One big sales tip. Imagine you sell shower curtains and shower rods to hotel chains.

You call on hotel chains. You want to be different. Your big idea is to help hotels to differentiate their sleeping rooms is a bowed shower curtain rod.

In the shower - the space is the same, it just feels bigger and better. Why can't a sales person think up big ideas like this?

One big sales tip. Everybody and his mother and grandmother has Pyrex measuring cups in their kitchen cabinets.

They lasted for years and demand was declining. One big idea - change the handle to make the measuring cups stackable and the rest is history. Sales take off!

Big ideas are everywhere! But you have to be looking for them. They're not going to tap you on the shoulder and say 'Here I am - ready or not!'

Big ideas are the result of one basic question and this is a huge sales tip for you to consider.

It's an easy question and it seldom gets asked. It's the incubator for all big ideas.

You'll be amazed how customers will respond to you if you ask this question once a day.

Your customers will be delirious if you asked this question on every sales call.

Guess what - when you ask this question often you will attract the big ideas that you can share with your customers.

The question that leads to big ideas is 'How can we do it better?' Keep asking this question and your plate will soon be filled with big ideas you can share with your customers.

Big ideas can win customers for a lifetime!

Sex ratios, size distributions, and sexual dimorphism in the dioecious tree Ilex aquifolium (Aquifoliaceae)

Am. J. Bot., Vol. 85, No. 11. (1 November 1998), pp. 1602-1608.

Sex ratio and sexual dimorphism in physiology and growth were studied in the dioecious tree Ilex aquifolium at two localities in northern Spain. Genet sex ratio was significantly male biased in one locality but not in the other. However, ramet and flowering ramet sex ratios were male biased at both study sites. Males had significantly thicker main trunks than females in one locality and produced more ramets in the other. Growth rate, estimated from mean width of annual rings, did not differ between localities, but males produced wider rings than females at both sites. Mean annual growth rates over the last 10, 20, and 30 yr were significantly higher for males. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence indicated that the efficiency of photosynthesis of leaves on nonfruiting branches of females was higher than for leaves on branches of male plants under low-light conditions, though not under saturating-light conditions. Efficiency of photosynthesis was significantly lower on fruiting branches of female plants than on nonfruiting branches. We discuss whether the observed between-sex differences are attributable to the higher cost of reproduction in females and/or to pollen competition.

Promoter-Proximal Introns in Arabidopsis thaliana Are Enriched in Dispersed Signals that Elevate Gene Expression

Plant Cell (4 March 2008), tpc.107.057190.

Introns that elevate mRNA accumulation have been found in a wide range of eukaryotes. However, not all introns affect gene expression, and direct testing is currently the only way to identify stimulatory introns. Our genome-wide analysis in Arabidopsis thaliana revealed that promoter-proximal introns as a group are compositionally distinct from distal introns and that the degree to which an individual intron matches the promoter-proximal intron profile is a strong predictor of its ability to increase expression. We found that the sequences responsible for elevating expression are dispersed throughout an enhancing intron, as is a candidate motif that is overrepresented in first introns and whose occurrence in tested introns is proportional to its effect on expression. The signals responsible for intron-mediated enhancement are apparently conserved between Arabidopsis and rice (Oryza sativa) despite the large evolutionary distance separating these plants. 10.1105/tpc.107.057190

To Learn a Language like German FIRST Find the S

To Learn a Language (like German) FIRST Find the Similarities by Kathy Steinemann

Even if you don't know a single word of German, you can probably read and understand the following German text. Did you know that English and German descended from the same language? (Proto-Germanic) Many words in both languages are the same or similar.

A link to this story's translation will be provided at the end of this article.

* GERMAN STORY *

Guten Tag!

Bob lebt in Kanada - in Montreal.

Gute Nacht! Ich schreibe mehr morgen früh.

* MORE EXAMPLES *

Sommer kommt im Juni.

* HOW DID IT GO? *

Maybe you didn't understand the German text completely. Read it a second - and then a third time.

If you are observant, you will notice a few details:

*German usually uses a 'K' instead of a hard 'C': Canada=Kanada, Monica=Monika.

*The English 'ph' often becomes 'f': telephone=Telefon.

*Nouns are capitalized: fruit=Frucht, milk=Milch, butter=Butter, sugar=Zucker.

*Possessives are not formed with an apostrophe + s: brother's=Bruders.

*The English 'sh' becomes 'sch': shines=scheint, shovels=schaufelt.

*Many words are exactly the same: Winter, November, Finger, Party, Wind, Hunger, Film.

Now that you have a few hints, you can probably read the German text again and understand even more. Think of the words in context, and allow your mind to fill in the blanks.

Related words, like the ones above, with common ancestral roots are called 'cognates'. There are many, many more than those presented here.

Over the years, however, many words that used to mean the same thing in both languages have evolved and have acquired different connotations. For example, the old German word for 'wife' - 'Weib' is nowadays generally applied in a deprecating manner. It might be used in a phrase that means 'you crazy woman!' or in instances where an English person would say 'broad' or 'dame'.

The German word 'Gift' does not mean 'gift' - it means 'poison'.

The point that is being made here, however, is that you should actively search for similarities. Over time you will discover the exceptions. You will feel comfortable with the similarities and form a foundation on which you can build. The learning task then becomes less daunting - and even enjoyable.

Over the centuries the world has become a melting pot of cultures and languages. Many words and phrases have crossed borders. Globalization - spurred by newspapers, radio, TV, the internet, and jet travel - has accelerated the process. We often use foreign-derived words without even realizing - angst, soup du jour, cafe au lait, poltergeist, bona fide, carte blanche, nom de plume, savoir-faire . . .

Every time you come to a new text passage, scan it to find what you already know (or can guess) for a general sense of what it means. Then tackle the unknown parts.

Your learning will progress more quickly as a result.

Author's Note: *The German passage is presented in parallel translation at A-Language-Guide.com. *You will also find more German-English texts and some helpful language articles.

Drying Roses The Right Way

Drying Roses The Right Way
By Rob Clifton

For gardeners it is well known that it takes a certain amount of discipline to cultivate a rose garden. With drying roses it is not nearly a large of an amount of information needed to successfully dry a rose. Cultivating a rose bush is more of a science and a discipline, whereas drying roses is more of an art form than a science. It is an art form that can be learned by anyone willing to give it a try.

Drying roses is a great method that you can use in order to preserve their beauty and their memory. It is important that you first learn how to dry a rose properly before you actually attempt to do so. You don't want to damage the lovely rose you are attempting to preserve, do you?

Techniques in Air Drying Roses

The two most commonly used techniques in drying roses are: sand drying and air drying. Each method has its strengths and weaknesses. Learn each method and then determine which will work the best for you.

In this article we will explore the various ways of air drying roses. All that is required is a pair of high quality shears, florist wire, coat hanger and a dark dry location.

Within the air drying technique there are several different methods that you can choose from, they are drying the flower only or drying the flower and stem.

To dry the Rose Flower Only

• Cut the stem from the rose as close as possible to the flower.
• Cut a piece of florist wire about six inches long.
• Insert a piece of florist wire into the rose bloom.
• Wrap the other end of the wire around the coat hanger.
• Each rose must be dried hanging upside down.
• Make sure to leave some space between the roses, they should not be touching.
• Hang the coat hanger in a dry dark room for about two to three weeks to be certain that they are completely dried out.

Another air trying technique is to dry both the rose flower and its stem. With this technique the dried roses can be displayed in a vase or in a dried arrangement.

Drying Roses With the Stem

• Start with unblemished roses
• Remove bottom leaves
• Collect a few stems together
• Wrap an elastic band round the collection of stems
• Hang the collection upside down from a coat hanger, nail or hook in a cool dry, dark location
• In about two to three weeks you will have a collection of dried roses

Now that you have learned how to air dry your roses. Dried roses make wonderful accent any room décor. A bouquet of dried roses in a vase adds a lovely touch to any room and will brighten up a sterile office environment.
