Development of Height-Age Models for Estimating Juvenile Height of Coastal Douglas-Fir in British Columbia

Western Journal of Applied Forestry (July 2003), pp. 207-212.

Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menzeisii) is an important and abundant tree species in coastal British Columbia. Juvenile height estimates are important for management prescriptions and decisions involving regenerating stands. We used 100 plots to investigate the juvenile height growth of coastal Douglas-fir. The growth patterns of the sample trees were observed by felling and splitting them longitudinally and measuring the height of the annual nodes from the point of germination. Sixty-four plots were used to develop a height model as a function of total age and site index. The Chapman-Richards, Gompertz, and modified exponential and power models were fit using nonlinear least squares regression. The models were tested with the remaining 36 plots. The modified exponential and power equation was the best fitting of the three models. None of the models met the regression assumption of independently normally distributed residuals with a mean of zero and a constant variance. The modified exponential and power model was further analyzed using the complete data set by fitting height growth and incorporating a model for serial correlation in the error term to improve the statistical properties of the model. Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Its Cause and Cure

Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Its Cause and Cure by Chelsea Aubin

Generalized anxiety disorder, commonly called GAD, affects about 3% of the population. It is a constant state o worry, anxiety and fear including excessive dwelling on the things that could possibly happen. Because a person with generalized anxiety disorder continually worries, they often exhibit depression as well as anxiety.

When a person has GAD, they feel their minds can not be shut off. They think, think, think, and think some more. If only I had done this differently; what if that happens; why did I say that; if only I had done that sooner; and it goes on and on. It becomes so bad for many people with GAD that sleep is all but impossible and they can not function normally on a day-to-day basis. This causes a lack of energy and loss of interesting in life in general.

Generalized anxiety disorder can cause physical symptoms as well. These include headaches, inability to focus or concentrate, shaking, twitching, insomnia, mood swings and irritability. They may be unable to relax and easily startled or 'jumpy'.

Generalized anxiety disorder can be successfully treated and cured once correctly diagnosed. Cognitive-behavioral therapy seems to provide the best results in addressing GAD. Cognitive-behavioral therapy involves learning to view problems and situations from a different perspective as well as learning to apply techniques to reduce stress and anxiety. Sometimes prescription medications are included in the treatment plans.

Many mental disorders can not be cured but generalized anxiety disorder is curable! If GAD is attacked from all sides, using the best treatment plan for a specific, well-motivated person, results of treatment can be seen in as little as three to six months. If you or a loved one shows signs that might be generalized anxiety disorder, a medical professional should be consulted so the disorder can be cured as quickly as possible.

Diameter, Height, Crown, and Age Relationship in Eight Neotropical Tree Species

Ecology, Vol. 76, No. 6. (1995), pp. 1926-1939.

Diameter, height, crown shape, and crown area were measured on 23-42 trees ranging in size from saplings to large adults for each of eight common dicotyledonous tree species in a neotropical forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Six species were canopy trees, one species was an emergent tree, and the remaining species was an understory tree. Crown areas and shapes were quantified by eight radii measured every 45@? from the trunk to the vertically projected edge of the crown. areas were calculated from the areas of circles with the average radius; crown shapes were measured by the coefficients of variation of the eight crown radii. Age-diameter relationships were estimated from diameter growth increments over an 8-yr period. Observed height-diameter relationships were compared to expectations based on the theories of elastic similarity, constant stress, and geometric similarity. Slopes of log-transformed height-diameter relationships differed from the theoretically expected value of 2/3 for elastic similarity in three of eight species; two canopy species had higher slopes, but not as high as the expected value of 1.0 for geometric similarity; one canopy species was shorter, but the slope was greater than the slope of 0.5 predicted by the constant stress theory. The theory of elastic similarity also predicts that canopy mass to trunk mass ratio should remain constant during tree growth. Observed ratios based on proxy variables for the masses were constant in six of eight species--the two deviant species had heavier crowns in large trees than expected from their diameters. Crown shapes were much more variable in some species than others. The understory species had much lower r^2 values for height-diameter and crown-diameter relationships, suggesting that these relationships may be more variable in trees that live in the less windy understory than in trees that reach the canopy. The allometric relationships for the species in this study were not unique for each species, suggesting that it may be possible to model the allometric relationships of many species with fewer equations than species. If the primary adaptive forces acting on tree species in a diverse forest are their physical environment and the sum of competitive interactions with an ever-changing mix of neighbors, then different species may have similar resource allocation patterns. Thus, using the age-size relationships, we found three groups of species among the seven canopy species. Two groups had three species each and one species (Ocotea whitei) was in a group by itself. The understory species, Faramea occidentalis, was also in a group by itself.

Regulatable atrial natriuretic peptide gene therapy for hypertension

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 102, No. 39. (27 September 2005), pp. 13789-13794.

Hypertension (HTN) is a disease that begins with dysfunctional renal-sodium excretion and progresses to a syndrome of highly elevated systolic, diastolic, and mean arterial pressures. Inadequacies in the therapy of HTN have led to the investigation of the gene therapy of this disease by using systemic overproduction of vasodilatory peptides, such as atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP). However, gene-therapy approaches to HTN using ANP are limited by the need for long-term ANP gene expression and, most important, control of ANP gene expression. Here, we introduce a helper-dependent adenoviral vector carrying the mifepristone (Mfp)-inducible gene-regulatory system to control in vivo ANP expression. In the BPH/2 mouse model of HTN, Mfp-inducible ANP expression was seen for a period of >120 days after administration of vector. Physiological effects of ANP, including decreased systolic blood pressure, increased urinary cGMP output, and decreases in heart weight as a percentage of body weight were also under the control of Mfp. Given these capabilities, this vector represents a paradigm for the gene therapy of HTN. 10.1073/pnas.0506807102

Private Investigator School

Private Investigator School
By Peter Emerson

The need for private detectives is growing at a very rapid rate. There are several of these so-called private investigator schools and courses that offer licensed and approved training. There are many fine local colleges and vocational rehab schools that do an excellent job of teaching private investigation.

Some level of investigative knowledge and skills that successful private investigators possess is a must-have to gain entry in any one of these schools. The training includes knowing the rules and regulations of the industry, including licensing regulations, where and how to obtain information, how to properly gather and document evidence, how to interview people and how to properly report the results of their work.

Some vital matters and rock-solid facts are necessary to actually become a successful private investigator. As a private investigator moves through a career, he or she has to specialize in various fields, requiring more specific education in certain areas. Investigation schools offer courses that cover many basic and vital topics such as private investigator licensing requirements, types of private investigation work and services, role of the private investigator, rules and regulations of private investigation private investigation ethic, criminal investigations, civil investigations, support investigations, trial support services, special investigative services, case file preparation and investigation planning

Many schools also have a very targeted syllabus and teach the individuals how to plan an investigation. A successful business school prepares their candidate in many ways Surveillance tricks, conducting undercover operations, realizing the importance of information, differentiating between circumstantial and direct evidence, information documenting methods, investigative report writing, preservation of evidence, successful tips on starting and running ones own private investigating agency and much more.

Becoming a private investigator demands many skills. Continued success depends on the investigator's ability to get things done with competence and in compliance with the law and the applicable regulations relating to private investigation services.

The courses are thus designed to provide practical tips, techniques and solutions one may need for investigative success without incurring the hard knocks that come from on-the-job learning.

Sex ratios, size distributions, and sexual dimorphism in the dioecious tree Ilex aquifolium (Aquifoliaceae)

Am. J. Bot., Vol. 85, No. 11. (1 November 1998), pp. 1602-1608.

Sex ratio and sexual dimorphism in physiology and growth were studied in the dioecious tree Ilex aquifolium at two localities in northern Spain. Genet sex ratio was significantly male biased in one locality but not in the other. However, ramet and flowering ramet sex ratios were male biased at both study sites. Males had significantly thicker main trunks than females in one locality and produced more ramets in the other. Growth rate, estimated from mean width of annual rings, did not differ between localities, but males produced wider rings than females at both sites. Mean annual growth rates over the last 10, 20, and 30 yr were significantly higher for males. Measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence indicated that the efficiency of photosynthesis of leaves on nonfruiting branches of females was higher than for leaves on branches of male plants under low-light conditions, though not under saturating-light conditions. Efficiency of photosynthesis was significantly lower on fruiting branches of female plants than on nonfruiting branches. We discuss whether the observed between-sex differences are attributable to the higher cost of reproduction in females and/or to pollen competition.

Increase Profits and Improve Service with Anonymous Email for Your Restaurant by Chris Robertson

Anonymous email is a convenient way for employees or patrons to send or receive a message about your restaurant business without having to reveal their identity. It protects their privacy and allows them to communicate without embarrassment or fear.

Online Anonymous Email Accounts for Restaurants

There are online sites that offer this service specifically for restaurants. You can open anonymous email accounts to use for different purposes. Your message will be sent to the recipient's address with no indication of who sent it. It will go through their server and any replies will be sent back to them. You will be able to retrieve the reply from your server. It is different than private label email, which provides a separate address for you. Employees or customers who need to email you anonymously can do so without being identified.

Uses for Anonymous Email

Anonymous email can be useful in many ways. If you would like to talk to a teacher or faculty member but do not want to risk a confrontation, sending an email would be a solution. You might have knowledge of illegal activities but wish to remain uninvolved, so you could warn the authorities without dread of repercussions. You could send an anonymous email if there are practices at your work place that your boss is not aware of. If you own a restaurant or some other business, you can set up anonymous email accounts that your customers or employees can use to send you important information about your business.

Help Your Restaurant Improve Service

Sending or receiving anonymous email can be helpful for your restaurant managers and yourself by allowing employees and customers to voice their opinions or problems. If they would like to complain or make a comment, they can do so without revealing their identity. This contact can help you or your restaurant manager to identify specific problems or needs. It gives you a chance to see what the customer or employees see and correct problems you were not aware of.

When you go to a restaurant and the service is poor, you may never want to return. Place yourself in your own customers' shoes. By reporting it, you will give the management a chance to correct the problem. With anonymous email, you can prevent this from happening with your restaurant patrons. Instead of losing customers through ignorance, you will have the opportunity to improve service.

If customers are not satisfied with the quality of the food, they can report by anonymous email. Managers and owners want to know if their customers are not pleased with their meal. Customers will usually not eat in a place where the food is not well prepared and appetizing. If you take their comments seriously, you can greatly improve service and profits for your restaurant. Anonymous e mail makes this possible.

Encourage Employees to Use Anonymous Email

Now, your restaurant employees can send anonymous emails to report difficulties or problems at work. It will protect them from repercussions or censure by other employees. If they witness theft or other illegal practices at your restaurant, they can send a message to enlighten their superiors. You can help improve the work environment and eliminate strife between employees when problems arise.

Sending Positive Comments

Employees and customers can also send an anonymous email to compliment and encourage your restaurant staff. If they have enjoyed good service, they can let you know. If the food was exceptionally good, they can tell you how much it pleased them. Every constructive comment will be appreciated. Your restaurant managers will feel gratified to hear praise for their efforts.

Whether for customer or employee comments (or both), anonymous email can help your restaurant run more efficiently than ever. Improving service, employee relations, and customer relations will help build a superior establishment and healthier business. Everyone will benefit from advances made in their favorite restaurant!

Plug-in Saturn To Be Released

Plug-in Saturn To Be Released 'In 2009-ish' by Anthony Fontanelle

Although the Chevy Volt and the Opel Flextreme are receiving so much attention, these plug-in hybrid vehicles will not be the first PHEV units to be released into the market by Detroit automaker General Motors. Instead, the first plug-in hybrid vehicle that will be made available to the general car buying public from the automaker is the Saturn Vue. Saturn's general manager Jill Lajdziak said that the vehicle can run for about ten miles on electricity power alone before switching on its 'range extender' will be on the road 'very quickly'.

Lajdziak said that they are expecting to market the plug-in Saturn Vue 'in 2009-ish'. The announcement was made by the brand general manger at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show. The Saturn brand unveiled the production version of the Saturn Astra, a rebadged Opel Astra. The said nameplate will be the newest addition to Saturn's revitalized lineup and the latest installment of the twinning project that General Motors started with Opel and Saturn brands.

Major automakers like Nissan, Toyota, and of course General Motors are fighting to develop a practical plug-in gas-electric hybrid vehicle. Although Toyota has been testing a PHEV for weeks now, Saturn's projected time of release of a PHEV is the soonest. That would give General Motors the huge PR benefits that this expected coup will bring. After all, the first mass-produced PHEV will usher in a new era in the auto industry.

With Toyota on track to overtake General Motors to be the largest automaker next year, the Detroit automaker needs to affirm that it still has a fighting chance of regaining its title. The Detroit automaker had the reputation of having the edge when it comes to automotive technology breakthroughs. But with the arrival of the Toyota Prius, that title was essentially passed to the Japanese automaker. If General Motors can be the first automaker to have a practical plug-in hybrid vehicle mass produced, they will once again have that reputation which they may have lost in the past.

The plug-in version of the Vue will be the third hybrid variant of the SUV which has been recently redesigned with the help of Opel. The first hybrid variant of the Vue was the one which employs General Motors' 'mild hybrid' system. The said system does not use electricity power alone and instead uses the electric motor for additional power when needed. The second variant is the Vue using the automaker's two-mode hybrid which can shut down its engine during low-power operation.

According to the automaker, although the Vue may seem like an SUV version of the Volt, it will use an entirely different technology. That means that the makers of Saturn car bras and other accessories for Saturn vehicles is receiving much support from its parent that General Motors is currently developing two plug-in hybrid technologies.

Aside from the Saturn Vue mild hybrid, which the brand is already selling, General Motors also offers its consumers other hybrid alternatives. Due this fall is the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and the GMC Yukon Hybrid.

Identification of a subregion within rat neostriatum for the dopaminergic modulation of lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation.

Brain research, Vol. 153, No. 3. (29 September 1978), pp. 515-528.

Experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the involvement of neostriatal dopaminergic transmission in lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation might be specific to a striatal subregion. Crystalline application of dopamine or D-amphetamine increased self-stimulation rate only when made to ventral anterior striatum (VAS); more dorsal or posterior applications were ineffective. A comparison of dose-response functions for dopamine using solution injections in VAS and posterior striatum (PS) confirmed that only VAS was responsive. Injections or applications of 6-hydroxydopamine suppressed responding only when made into VAS. Haloperidol injections decreased responding only for VAS and not PS injection sites. Applications or injections of scopolamine often increased responding when made into VAS, but this effect was unreliable. Applications or injections of scopolamine to more posterior sites consistently suppressed responding. It was concluded that dopaminergic transmission in VAS, alone among the striatal sites tested, is facilitatory on hypothalamic self-stimulation. The effects of drug applications to nucleus accumbens were generally similar to VAS, and it was suggested that these areas may be functionally similar. An examination of the known afferents to VAS indicated that this area of neostriatum, like n. accumbens, may be influenced by activity in limbic structures. This anatomy may help provide an understanding of how neostriatum, traditionally considered to have a motor function, might be involved in central reward processes.

Role Models Named Best In Business by Wendy Mitchell

A recent poll found that 87 percent of youths feel they are ready to enter the workforce-but what type of work world will be waiting?

According to a study released by the Institute for the Future, there will be a substantial increase in the number of businesses run by one person with no employees, and an increasing demand for entrepreneurship education.

So how will young people adapt to the work world's changing landscape? One way is by turning to role models. That's where a set of business awards comes in. Called the JA Worldwide (Junior Achievement) U.S. Business Hall of Fame, they honor the nation's most distinguished businesspeople for outstanding contributions to free enterprise, and for serving as role models for the world's youth. The 2007 laureates include:

• Harold Boeschenstein (1896-1972), Chairman and CEO, Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation. Boeschenstein led Owens-Corning from its inception until his retirement in 1967. Today, the company has annual sales of over $6 billion.

Effects of repeated amphetamine injections on lateral hypothalamic brain stimulation reward and subsequent locomotion.

Behavioural brain research, Vol. 55, No. 2. (30 June 1993), pp. 195-201.

Intracranial self-stimulation was assessed by the curve-shift method before and after D-amphetamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) or vehicle injections given 8 times at 48-h intervals. Locomotor was assessed, in a separate test box, for the hour following the 35-min self-stimulation sessions. Amphetamine facilitated self-stimulation, shifting to the left the function relating response rate to stimulation frequency. The drug was most effective the first time it was given; the effects were weaker but unchanging across the remaining 7 days of repeated testing. When control animals that had been given vehicle for the eight initial days of testing were subsequently treated with amphetamine, it facilitated the behavior to the same extent as was seen the first time it was given in the experimental group. Amphetamine significantly increased locomotion in the period following the self-stimulation tests, and the degree of increase grew slightly but steadily with repeated testing; there was more rapid sensitization to this response in animals that were not subjected to self-stimulation testing prior to activity testing. These data do not fit well with earlier reports of sensitization to the reward-enhancing effects of amphetamine and reflect a potential dissociation between the locomotor-stimulating and reward-facilitating effects of amphetamine.

The FX market is currently exploding in popularity with vast potentials for the future. Currencies are bought and sold freely around the world by both individual traders and large institutions. Established in 1970s, the market has gained grounds with the active participation of many countries. One can earn higher profits in this market with proper understanding and tactical plans.

Forex Trading Course Information
A Forex trading course is a systematic way of learning to trade Forex. The first and foremost thing to learn is that Forex trade involves two currencies. One currency of a country is bought by selling another currency. It is expressed like this USD/JPY, indicating the value of one USD against the value of Japanese Yen.

Normally, the rate has two values, one is the purchasing rate and the other is selling rate, with purchasing rate slightly lesser than the selling rate. The difference is called spread. The movement of price is expressed in Pips (short name for percentage in points). By convention, the value of pips is fixed with 4 decimals except in the above examples involving the currencies of USD and Japanese Yen, where it is in 3 decimals.

A Forex trading course not only covers the basic principles but also takes into account the details about the country economy a whole. The information about the economic condition of a country is learned under four broad categories viz., Gross Domestic Product, Consumer Price Index, industrial production and retails sales. The theoretical part of the course covers this.

Online trading and Forex trading videos
Online trading is a facility of trading in the market in its real time without the help of the brokers. It is achieved with the help of the internet. Forex trading videos demonstrate the online trading. Videos are one of the most effective training tools to explain the concept of trading. They are effectively used to impart training to the learners in the art of online trading.

In the videos, the mistakes and blunders are highlighted to demonstrate how costly it may prove to be later. The facts and figures of the market with the charts and the current market trends are well explained with the help of videos. For the people undergoing the training visuals seem to be more effective for aiding in grasping the knowledge about the market. Technical analysis, fundamental analysis and economic indicators are well explained in the video presentation of the training.

The advantage of video presentation is to allow the student to review the material many times at his or her convenience. Video training thoroughly covers the material the same each time unlike live seminars where the person delivering the lecture may miss something between the sessions

Forex trading videos have become the preferred delivery method for enabling traders to learn to consistently enter and exit profitable trades and create a successful Forex trading business.

Withdrawal from chronic amphetamine elevates baseline intracranial self-stimulation thresholds.

Psychopharmacology, Vol. 117, No. 2. (January 1995), pp. 130-136.

Intracranial self-stimulation was assessed before, within, and after a chronic amphetamine treatment regimen. Amphetamine was given twice daily 5 days per week for 6 weeks at dosages escalating from 1 to 10 mg/kg per injection. Lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation rate-frequency functions were taken 36 h after the last injection in each weekly series and weekly for 3 weeks following the last injection. Frequency thresholds increased and maximal response rates decreased progressively as a function of amphetamine withdrawal during treatment; each returned to near normal levels within 2 weeks of the last injection. When subsequently tested under amphetamine, animals previously receiving the 6-week amphetamine treatment regimen had self-stimulation thresholds and maximal response rates that did not differ significantly from those of saline-treated control animals. These data confirm that chronic amphetamine treatment results in a dependence syndrome characterized in part by a phasic depression in the brain mechanism mediating the reinforcing effects of lateral hypothalamic electrical stimulation.

(ARA) ? Theyre really useful and really cool, enthuses Allysa Halvorson, age 11. Shes not talking about the latest Groovy Girl doll or her Nail Jazz. Shes talking about computers.

Everyday after school, Halvorson learns about graphic design, Internet searches and how to use PowerPoint and Photoshop through the Club Tech program. Club Tech is an innovative technology program being implemented at more than 3,300 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. A partnership with Microsoft has provided a $100 million, five-year grant to outfit the Clubs with the latest software, a comprehensive technology-oriented curriculum and technical training for Club staff.

Historically, Boys & Girls Clubs have been known as safe, after-school havens where parents could send their kids to play sports, swim and get help with their homework. But now they are much more than that. The Club Tech program allows the organization to help prepare young people for a world in which technology has become increasingly important.

When I started coming to the club, I had never seen so many computers, says 16-year-old Joel Bueno, a regular participant in the Club Tech program in Mesa, Ariz. I was impressed -- we dont even have that many at school.

Club Tech programs help kids learn how to use PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and the Internet for everything from book reports to research papers to career exploration. The Digital Arts Suite, a component of the Club Tech program, explores Web page design, desktop publishing, digital photography, digital movie making and electronic music making. The programs are all age-appropriate, interactive and most importantly, fun.

We recognize the technology changes going on in the world, and we want to ensure that our Clubs and the young people they serve are a part of it, says Charisma Cannon, a spokesperson for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

The array of Club Tech programs are designed to equip young people with the basic and advanced technological skills needed to excel in school and the job market. They introduce kids to a full range of digital skills and possibilities, and demonstrate to them the power of technology and how it can be used to foster the imagination and explore the world around them.

These kids are intrinsically motivated to learn, says Mesa, Ariz., Club Tech instructor Josh Buffy. Given the choice to continue working or have free time, they choose to continue working on their PowerPoint presentations. They find it more gratifying than a computer game.

Even the smaller children get a lot from the program. These kids have no fear, says Buffy. They do fine.

Club Tech integrates technology into every aspect of the Boys & Girls Clubs organization, from the overall management to core programs, including educational enhancement, character and leadership development, and the arts.

Boys & Girls Clubs have evolved as more than just a place for recreation they are taking an active role in preparing young people for success in the future, whatever their career choice may be.
